How To Grow And Save Your Edges Under A Wig
Hello, it’s Femi from Femi S. Hair. Weave and wigs can be so much fun and a great and quick way to change your hairstyle. But it is still important to take care of your hair underneath, especially your edges. If you neglect your hair and don’t give it the attention it needs, you might have dry, brittle hair that will eventually break off. Leading to thin hair and thin edges. So, let's talk about how to grow and save your edges underneath your wigs and weave.
Don’t Get Your Hair Braided Too Tight
So, the first thing I would say when it comes to protecting your edges, and you probably already know this by now, is to not get your hair braided too tight! I repeat, do not get your hair braided too tight. If you go to a stylist who braids your hair way too tight, then please go to a different hair stylist. It might be best if you braid your own hair instead, since you know your comfort level. If you do not know how to cornrow or braid, there are tons of videos on YouTube to learn. It would take time and patience to learn and practice but your hair will be thanking you in the long run.
Only Use Certain Braid Patterns Underneath your Wigs or Weave
I also believe, from my experience that the direction of your cornrows can determine the tension that is given towards your edges or your hairline, which lead to thinning edges. Above you see the picture of the two different braid patterns that people usually do underneath their wigs. The first braid pattern you see the cornrows are going down the side if the hair line. The problem with this pattern is that when you have one cornrow going down all the hair strands are being wrapped and interwoven all into this one cornrow. That can lead to tension around your edges. I would recommend instead of having one row down the sides of your hair, do individual cornrows going straight back instead because then that way your hair on your edges isn’t just in one group. They are in set groups and not being. The tension isn't building up. That would help alleviate any type of tightness that you have that might cause edges to start thinning over time.
Give Your Edges A Break!
I recommend to really give your edges a break if you notice any thinning by not braiding then in cornrows at all. By leaving them out and alone you are giving your hair time to recover and grow back. If your hair is natural under your wigs and it won’t lay flat, then I recommend putting your hairline in very loose twists. This way the twists would lay flat underneath my wigs. In this video you can see that I do this method and my hair line doesn’t have any tension at all. I am starting to see a different and my edges are gradually starting to get thicker.
Use Hair Growth Serums
Another way you can help grow back your edges is to start using hair growth serums. Here are a few growth serums that I recommend:
I highly recommend the New Life Hair Growth Serum. This serum is a lightweight mixture with the key ingredients to provide your hair and scalp with the essential nutrients for growth. It has Safflower Oil, Castro Oil, Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Black Currant Seed Oil, Mint Crystals, and Vitamin E. These ingredients can help increase scalp health and circulation and promotes the growth and thickness of hair.
Also The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density is a product that I have been hearing works wonders on thing hairlines. Also the Smart Care Virgin Argan Oil Miracle Drop Oil is a serum that I have tried. The Smart Care serum stated to shake well before use can be used on dry or damp hair and to apply only to areas that are balding. The Ordinary serum states to apply a few drops or as needed to clean, dry scalp and to apply once daily, ideally at bedtime. So the Smart Care serum is good to use during the day time and The Ordinary serum during is good to use during the night. Hair serums can increase blood flow in the scalp, which allows the hair to be well nourished, resulting in the appearance of thicker hair.
Give Your Edges some TLC
If you're trying to like to save your edges or grow your edges back, it is important to make sure you are touching your hairline every day or every other day. Seriously touch your hairline right now. Do your edges feel dry? If it feels dry then lightly spray your edges with water and seal in with an oil to give it moisture or use a hair serum. Does your hairline feel sore? If so, then loosen you cornrows if your hair is braided. Give your edges some love and attention. And be consistent!! Keep you edges moisturized and try to stay away from products that will dry out your hair over time. You will be glad you did in the long run.
